Description

This painting depicts the divine bond between Goddess Laxmi, also known as Chenchu Laxmi, and the Kinnera instrument. The Kinnera, a traditional folk instrument, is played by the Chenchu tribe, who inhabit the forests of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. According to mythology, the tribe’s name originates from an ancient story. To calm the wrath of Narasimha Swami, who had become violent after slaying Hiranyakashyap, Goddess Laxmi incarnated as a tribal girl named Chenchu Laxmi. In her avatar, she confronted Narasimha Swami, challenging him to strike her before harming the innocent villagers. Moved by her beauty and courage, Narasimha Swami calmed and asked her to marry him. The couple’s union led the tribe to worship them, and they began referring to themselves as the Chenchu tribe. The tribe would play the Kinnera and sing devotional songs as acts of reverence to the divine couple.
